About
Dance for Singers.
Dance for Singers is a 3-month virtual one-on-one dance intensive to help you gain the essential dance skills for opera, operetta and musical theater. It will help you feel confident, and gain body awareness of how your body moves, so your lack of dance experience never holds you back again!
My Teaching Style
As a teacher I am extremely compassionate, non-judgmental and body positive.
I was recently working with dancing singers at a major regional opera company. One of the leads was incredibly concerned about her lack of dance ability and was very worried about how her body would look onstage because she didn’t have a “dancer’s body.” She kept saying “I’m not a dancer.” I reassured her that not only would she look great, which she did, but that I was going to teach her in whatever way we found would work best for her. We worked together to customize a method of how to break down the steps and at a pace that she could fully understand and that was best for how her body moves. This led to a positive work environment and some amazing discoveries! She actually surprised me and herself when, for example, we learned that she could do a very low back bend. She performed the choreography beautifully. I made sure she was confident walking onto that stage and that we met her unique needs.
I’ve heard so many stories from fellow singers about how they felt embarrassed, nervous, or insecure, and about how a dance situation was frustrating. Sometimes it was because they didn’t want to disclose a chronic illness or ailment, injury, trauma or otherwise, and other times it was primarily because the choreographer did not know how to modify or break down movements with an awareness of the singers needs (connecting with the conductor or dancing and singing at the same time, for example). They felt like a failure or like they didn’t live up to their own or others' expectations, feeling that it held them back from being fully in the moment during a performance.
Maybe you feel that dance or having to dance makes you really nervous and holds you back from possible job opportunities or the confidence to advance in your career. Maybe you don't know where to begin when it comes to dance and feel overwhelmed at the thought of having to take a dance class or learn choreography. If you have been diagnosed with a chronic physical condition or you are recovering from an injury, you may feel reluctant to learn basic dance skills or to apply for an audition or for a production that requires some amount of movement.
I’m passionate about providing singers with a weekly customized, niche training program. Instead of an intimidating dance studio environment, my clients will be in the comfort of their own home or private space. I will help give each and every singer the confidence and physical awareness needed to be successful and less anxious when receiving any dance or movement in a production or audition setting.
You already have the work ethic, learning and memorization skills, as an opera singer that can be applied to learning how to dance and how to memorize choreographies. Just like your voice is unique, your body and the way it wants to move are unique.
I’m working exclusively with opera, operetta and musical theater singers who have zero to little dance training, who are looking for an alternative to dance studios or the usual dance class environment, to gain the fundamental skills they need to feel confident and comfortable when dancing in a production or applying for auditions that require some sort of dance element.
The Goals
This program is designed to help you to feel confident in applying for auditions that may require some level of dance. This program will:
- Build confidence and never have to feel embarrassed or self-conscious in front of your peers or the production staff.
- Prepare for any upcoming auditions or performances that require dance or movement of some kind.
- Modify and adjust movement or choreography to not strain or injure yourself.
- Re-adjust if you have chronic pain or a disability.
- Avoid making excuses to get out of having to learn choreography or movement.
Feel more secure to volunteer yourself or if you’re assigned any type of movement from the director.
- Figure out how to express yourself physically and memorize choreography in a way that works for your mind and body.
- Feel informed and confident in standing up for yourself and your body.
- Coordinate how to sing and dance simultaneously without compromising your technique or breathing.
I’m also trauma informed. I can help with how to love your body and how you move, especially if you’ve had any physical trauma.
Your body is unique and moves in its own unique way. How can we get the best out of how YOU move?
Goals & Teaching Style

Program Overview
The program is 12 weeks long. We will meet online, one-on-one, once a week. Each session is 1-hour long and held via Zoom. You'll begin learning choreography by week 2!
MONTH 1: FUNDAMENTALS & LEARN 1ST COMBINATION
WEEK 1: We'll have a discussion to confirm which styles of dance would be most beneficial to you and your career and further customize the program to your needs. Then we'll begin learning the basic techniques and steps of the 1st style of dance we prioritize.
WEEK 2: Review steps from week 1. Focus on adding directional change and speaking text from an aria/song with the steps. Work on balance and strength. (We will decide which arias or songs you would like to focus on.)
WEEK 3: Focus on arm, head and hand movement/technique. Add these techniques to the short combination. Review speaking text with the steps.
WEEK 4: Continue putting all of the movement together, polish, and complete the short combination. Try singing the text with the choreography.
MONTH 2: APPLY WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW & LEARN 2ND COMBINATION
WEEK 5: Begin working on the 2nd combination with a different dance style and aria/song of your choosing. We will also review what you learned during the first month.
WEEK 6: Continue with directional change and begin learning how to not compromise your singing technique/breathing when dancing. Add steps to the 2nd combination and try speaking the text with the steps.
WEEK 7: Finish learning the 2nd combination and continue working on breathing when dancing. Practice speaking the text with the steps. Review the dance from the first month.
WEEK 8: Focus on memorizing dance steps. Review the 2nd combination while singing the text. Review the first combination and work on choreographic memory.
MONTH 3: REVIEW MONTHS 1 & 2 AND LEARN 3RD COMBINATION (OPTION TO LEARN A 4TH COMBINATION)
WEEK 9: Begin learning how to make adjustments when dancing (for example, if you miss a movement/step or you forget part of the combination, what do you do?). Begin working on the 3rd combination.
WEEK 10: Review the 3rd combination and try speaking the text with the steps. Review the first 2 combinations and work on memorization.
WEEK 11: Review all 3 combinations while singing the text. Check memorization. Option to begin working on a 4th combination.
WEEK 12: Review all three to four choreographies. Real-life scenario: Do a mock performance or audition or both! (What would it be like at an actual audition or performance).
Any element of the curriculum and/or schedule can be modified and adjusted in real-time if any opportunities come up during the program.
